GUIDELINES FOR

 

THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEXTUAL ARCHITECTURE AWARD

IN MEMORY OF ARCHITECT TURGUT CANSEVER

2022

 

 

AIM

Article 1.

 

Antalya Kepez Municipality (in cooperation with and under the coordination of Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey) has organized the “International Architecture Awards” in the name of architect Turgut Cansever (Antalya, 1921 – Istanbul, 2009).

 

The essential objective of the organization is to promote the spirit of Turgut Cansever, who is renowned for the wisdom, philosophical integrity, environmental and regional sensibilities manifested in his distinguished architectural works.

 

The organization aims to promote Cansever’s characteristic approach to architecture and urbanism at an international scale. The projects to be awarded have to exhibit original interpretations of the priorities of design underlying the architectural career of Turgut Cansever. These priorities can be defined as context specific design approach, architectural quality based upon sophistication of materials and a profound consciousness regarding multifaceted issues such as theoretical integrity, regional values, cultural continuity, humanist concerns and artistic sensibility.  The award recognizes the importance of local identity in a global world.

 

By accentuating the ongoing universal significance of the above mentioned values represented by Cansever’s architectural works, the organization also aims to improve cultural rapports between Turkey and other countries with regard to architectural culture.

 

SCOPE

Article 2.

The award is organized every year. Only realized projects whose construction has been completed can be submitted. All entries will be exposed in an exhibition. “The International  Contextual Architecture Awards in memory of Architect Turgut Cansever” are granted to the works selected by the jury. The award ceremony is held during the week of February 22, the anniversary of Turgut Cansever’s death.

AWARDS TO BE GRANTED

Article 4.

4.1 Turgut Cansever Grand Prix

The Grand Prix is granted to an architect who can raise awareness regarding the evaluation criteria of the awards (see article 1) in the context of our contemporary built environment through his/her lifelong projects and works. In this way the awarded architect will be promoted as an example and a role-model based on the above mentioned priorities of design manifested by the architectural career of Turgut Cansever (see article 1).

 

4.2 Turgut Cansever International Award

This award is granted to architectural project and its architect(s) from any country in the world. Through their projects, the candidate architects are expected to interpret the aforementioned priorities of architectural design characterizing the architectural career of Turgut Cansever (see article 1), thus raising awareness concerning these values in our contemporary built environment.

 

4.3 Turgut Cansever Local Award

This award is granted to one architectural project and its architect(s). The prerequisite for presenting a candidature is that the project was realized in the province of Antalya, Turkey. Through their projects, the candidate architects are expected to interpret the significance of the architectural design values adopted by Turgut Cansever throughout his career (see article 1) and  concerning these values in our contemporary built environment.

 

 

JURY AND REPORTERS

Article 5.

5.1The jury consists of five members. At least three of the jury members must be internationally reputable practicing architects or academicians of architecture of different nationalities not residing in Turkey. At least one of the jury members appointed from Turkey must be an academician in architecture. Also two substitute jury members, one being from outside of Turkey and one being from Turkey, are appointed. One of the foreign jurors is nominated by UIA as its representative.  All of the practicing architects appointed in the jury, including the substitute jury members, must have minimum ten years of professional experience. All of the academicians of architecture appointed in the jury, including the substitute jury members, must have doctorate (PhD) degrees. The reporters should be architects.

 

The transportation and accommodation expenses of the jury members are covered. The evaluation process is executed by the Jury and 2 reporters to be appointed by the jury in accordance with the standards above. The jury, the reporter and the organization committee is appointed afresh in every yearly edition of the award.

ORGANIZATION COMMITTEE

Article 6.

Three architects from among the members registered in Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey are appointed as the organization committee. This committee is responsible for managing the entire award process and organizing the exhibition. The place of work is Antalya.

 

THE RESPONSIBILITIES AND WORKING PROCESS OF THE JURY AND THE EVALUATION

Article 7.

The Jury convenes with at least 5 members. If one juror is not able to attend the meeting, an alternate replaces him/her.Evaluations are made on the basis of consensus or majority of votes. The Jury decides on the awards and the projects to be exhibited as stated in Article 4. If the number of jury and substitute members falls below three for various reasons, new jury members are appointed through the process defined in article 5.1. As a result of the evaluation process the jury may conclude that no candidate is eligible for the Grand Prix. In this case the Grand Prix may not be awarded.

 

PRINCIPLES FOR THE EXHIBITION AND THE APPLICATION

Article 8.

The terms and conditions for participating in the exhibition and nominating someone are defined and announced by the Organization Committee of “The International Architecture Awards in the name of Architect Turgut Cansever”. The first organization place of the exhibition should be Antalya.

 

METHOD FOR NOMINATING OR PARTICIPATING

Article 9.

Architects can both apply with their personal projects or nominate the projects of other architects by stating their justifications. Clients and professional organisations may also nominate projects and architects as candidates for the award.

 

 

 

 

 

APPLICATION FOR THE AWARD

Article 10.

Architects of the projects that are already completed or are in the completion phase by the end of the previous year are eligible for the award. Application conditions are stated in the guidelines published by the jury. Both individuals and institutions can nominate candidates for the Turgut Cansever Grand Prix.

 

Article 11.

The Jury Members, Substitute Jury Members, Organization Committee Members and Reporters involved in the awarding process and their first degree relatives and business partners may not be candidates and cannot apply for the award.

 

AWARDS

Article 12.

12.1 The awards are determined each year in in TL (Turkish Liras)

12.2 For 2022:

Award defined in Articles 4.1 is 25.000 TL (Twenty five thousand Turkish Liras)

Award defined in Articles 4.2 is 20.000 TL (Fifteen thousand Turkish Liras)

Award defined in Articles 4.3 is 15.000 TL (Ten thousand Turkish Liras)

 

ELIGIBILITY

Article 13.All architects from all countries of the world are eligible for the exhibition and the awards either individually or as a team.

 

GENERAL PRINCIPLES

Article 14.

14.1In applications made on behalf of companies or institutions, the name(s) of the architect(s) must be stated.

14.2A project that has once been displayed in an exhibition may not apply in a future period.

14.3The works intended for being displayed in the exhibition or nominated for the awards may not be withdrawn, once submitted to the Secretariat; submitting a piece of work means having agreed to its being published in the catalog.

14.4The construction must be licensed according to the local building codes. In addition, the projects implemented in Turkey should have been professionally inspected by the Chamber of Architects of Turkey.

 

STANDARDS FOR PROJECT SUBMISSION

Article 15.

The project submission should be in the format of DVD with the following content:

- 70 x 100 cm. plates(maximum 4) in pdf file with 150 dpi resolution,

  These documents should contain a photographic documentation of the implemented project and all architectural drawings (plans, sections, elevations, perspectives etc.) necessary for understanding the project

- Design approach report in A4 format (maximum 2 pages)

-A4 document with the address of the building, the name and address of the architect and the client/owner of the building

 

ANNOUNCEMENT AND PUBLICATION OF THE RESULTS

Article 16.

 

The launch of the Award, the deadline for entries, the dates of the Exhibition, Award and the Award Ceremony are publicized on the websites of the Municipality of Kepez, Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey and UIA. The award ceremony and the exhibition are organized firstly in Antalya and the exhibition may be repeated elsewhere in Turkey or abroad if deemed necessary. The catalogues to be published at the end of each award period are distributed to the participants free of charge. The announcements and the catalogue shall be published in English and Turkish languages.

 

PUBLICATION RIGHT

Article 17.

 

The Award organizer and UIA have the right to publicize the winning projects using the submitted documents. The names of the authors will always be mentioned.

 

TACIT AGREEMENT

Article 18.

 

By submitting an entry the participants accept the regulations and guidelines of this award in their entirety.

 

CALENDAR

-           January 20, 2022: Deadline for entries

The DVD shall be submitted personally together with signature, as a single package, until 17:30 on January 20, 2022 or be sent by courier to the Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey, to be submitted to the courier not later than 17:30 on January 20, 2022. The courier receipt indicating the submission date and time shall be sent to info@antmimod.org.tr by e-mail until 17:30 on January 20, 2022. In any case, the projects sent by courier must be received by the Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey until 17:30 on February 03, 2022 at the latest in order to be included in the assessment.


-           February 10, 2022: Jury Meeting

-           February 22, 2022: Award Ceremony and Opening of Exhibition

-           Results of the competition shall be announced by the Antalya Branch of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey at least 10 days before the award ceremony.

Results will be also published on the UIA web site.
